Jonker Walk, Malacca

Jalan Hang Jebat, or Jonker Walk is it commonly known, is a street in historical Chinatown of Melaka starting just across the river from the Dutch Square. Jonker Walk is flanked on both sides of the road with heritage houses dating back up to the 17th century. At that time, rich Baba Nonyas (also known as Perankans, descendents of 15th - 16th century Chinese immigrants marrying local Malay women) lived and did their business here.

Today, the street houses many shops selling antiques, textiles, handicrafts and souvenirs (similar to what you can find at Central Market in Kuala Lumpur). On the weekends, starting Friday night at 6pm, the road is closed off for traffic and turns in a very crowded night market. The famous Chicken Rice Ball dish can also be found here, just opposite the start of Jonker Walk near the bridge.

Book Village Malaysia Melaka / Kampung Buku Melaka, Malaysia

Hi readers,

I'm sorry for not updating my blog.. I sit for an exam almost 1 month. I will update my blog as many as i can...

Today, i would like to brief about Malacca Book Village. It was officially launched by Datuk Seri Hj. Mohd Ali bin Mohd Rustam, Chief Minister of Malacca on the  7 April 2007. Currently, its is the only book village in operation in Malaysia. It is the 5th book village in Asia and the 33rd in the world to be established. As a member of the International Organisation of Book Towns (IOB) and the Book Town Movement, it adopts the concept of traditional book towns and villages found around the world like in Germany, Norway and Wales but with local adaptations.

There are approximately 15,000 books in the book village that are available for reading, reference and purchase which are supplied by 8 resident publishers with additional support from the Malacca State Government. In addition, our book village aims to carve a niche for itself as a reference and resource center for books and reading materials concerning the State of Malacca. This also includes books written by writers originating from Malacca. These books are housed and displayed in a special section named "Anjung Karyawan Melaka" and they cover topics on history, tourism, culture, fiction and biographies.

Location

Kampung Buku Malaysia Melaka is located in Ayer Keroh, not far from Botanical Garden. A house in a modern 2 storey glass paneled building infused with elements of traditional Malay architecture.  Surrounded by abundant greenery and flora in the natural tropical rain forest,  visitors will enjoy the cool atmosphere and soothing sounds of local birds and creatures. Small animals like monkeys, squirrels and jungle lizards can also be frequently sighted. Besides that, the garden is also home to colorful and interesting insects like butterflies millipedes, praying mantises and dragonflies.

Malacca River Cruise

Hi readers,

Today, I would like to talk about The Malacca River Cruise. This is the great way to see the sights of Malacca at a leisurely place, in comfort and without breaking the natures. It takes 45 minutes per trip (around 9 km - 2 way)

The Cruise
The River Cruise is where the town began and it has played a key role in Malacca's colorful history. Taking a River Cruise is like seeing Malacca from the back door.

A few decades ago the river was a stinking waterway lined with decaying houses on stilts and the untidy rear side of crumbling shop-houses.

In recent years it has had a major face lift  Yes, there has been a lot of new development but at the same time an effort has been made to preserve many of the historic buildings and bridges along the river.

Even the newer buildings have been painted with colorful murals depicting different aspects of Malacca's rich history and culture. Nice scenery to who are love the natures.

You must try Malacca River Cruise when you come to Malacca. When you come at night many of the sights alongside the river are illuminated with colorful lights. If you go during the day you will get a better view of the murals and the building. My suggestion, go at sunset so that you can see both day and night. The choice is up to you.  :)
